Afraid of Ghosts, the seventh full-length solo album by Butch Walker, has a few surprises, like guest appearances by actor Johnny Depp and musician Bob Mould of Husker Du. The title track is Walker trying to come to terms with some of his personal demons, and features an acoustic guitar and accordion accompaniment.

The album’s first single is called “Chrissie Hynde,” an homage to the former front-woman of the Pretenders. In addition to Butch Walker’s vocals the tune features a mix of acoustic and electric guitar, piano, and simple drumbeat keeping the rhythm.

Johnny Depp contributes a blistering guitar solo to the song “21+,” which has no relation to the TV show 21 Jump Street that gave Depp his big break in the 1980s. “It’s actually just a sad song with a total bummer of a lyric,” Butch Walker commented. “For your sad days. But I like it. So here it is.”

Other songs on the new album are called Bed On Fire, Father’s Day, I Love You, and Still Drunk. The song “Autumn Leaves” was written after the death of a family friend, the late wife of his friend John. “I sat down and thought about how hard this all must have been for John, and couldn’t imagine losing a partner, especially when you have kids,” Butch Walker said on his website. “I don’t know if he would say these words in the song, but I tried to write it from the guy’s perspective.”
